‘So how was it, Dad? Your date with a celeb?’

‘Ash, it wasn’t a date. But you’re right, I should have listened to you.”

Then I wouldn’t have made a fool of myself…

“So when are you seeing her again? You’ll need to keep it low-profile. I can’t go to school if there are paps camped outside the house.”

“Paps? What are you talking about?”

“Paparazzi, Dad. Make sure they photograph you from your good side.”

Brady laughed. Conceded again that his daughter had been right.

“So you’ve Googled her?”

“No, Ash. I haven’t Googled her. Or Wiki’ed her or anything else-d her.”

“But you’d do that if she was a suspect.”

“Right. But she’s not a suspect. And it wasn’t a date.”

“So why haven’t you Googled her?”

“Because I’m old fashioned. Because I think you should discover things gradually. Have a conversation. Several conversations.”

“You still haven’t answered my question, Dad. When are you seeing her again?”

“I don’t know, Ash. When the hurly-burly’s done. When the battle’s lost and won. When I’ve sorted out what the hell happened to Billy and Sandra Garrity.”

Brady took a pace forward. Pulled his daughter to him. “You remember a year ago? We were driving over? We’d just stopped at the Hole of Horcum so Archie could have a wee?”

“Mmm… Sort of. It’s hard to talk when you hug me, Dad.”

“OK, sorry.” Brady let go of her. Stepped back. “You asked me if I was looking forward to it. Living in Whitby.”

“As we were driving down that hill? I remember.”

“So a lot’s happened since then. You alright with this, Ash? If I’m totally honest with you?”

“I thought that’s what we agreed, Dad?”

“We did. And… I loved your mum, Ash. Really loved her. Don’t cry, you’ll make me cry. If someone – one day – loves you like I loved your mum I’ll be beyond happy for you. And I thought… I thought there’d never be anyone else for me.”

“But now there is?”

“No. No, because it’s really complicated.”

“It doesn’t have to be complicated, Dad.”

“I know, sweetheart. That’s what logic tells me. But logic isn’t working right now. So it’s complicated.”

Ash nodded. “I don’t want you to be lonely, Dad. Mum wouldn’t have wanted you to be lonely.”

“I know that as well, love. I guess what I’m saying is, it takes time.”

Ash nodded. “I understand.” Looked up at her father. Smiled. “So you’re definitely going to see her again…”
